Arthur C. Rauscher

Arthur C. Rauscher is an author, essayist, and Argentine tango instructor from Atlanta, Georgia. He studied journalism at the University of Georgia and film studies at Georgia State University, where his education reflected an early recognition that stories, whether on the page or screen, were windows into lives and worlds beyond his own experience.

Born in Milledgeville, Georgia, the same small town that produced Flannery O'Connor, Rauscher moved to Atlanta in his mid-teens. The contrast between these two environments, rural South and urban South, provincial and cosmopolitan, shaped his understanding of the region's complexities and contradictions. He considers this the essential education of his formative years. It gave him an insider's knowledge of two very different ways of being Southern, and an outsider's perspective on both.

His fiction is rooted in psychological realism while focusing on the lives of ordinary people and their internal struggles as they search for what it means to be human. His stories move across different settings and eras, examining place, class, and the quiet contradictions that define life.

His literary interests range from the Southern Gothic of O'Connor and Faulkner to the psychological realism of Chekhov, Tolstoy, and Arthur Schnitzler, from the hardboiled clarity of Truman Capote and Daniel Woodrell to the social consciousness of Barbara Kingsolver, Eudora Welty, and James McBride.
